ChatGPT Legal Prompt of the Week #1

ChatGPT Legal Prompt of the Week #1

Nov 30, 2023

This week's task: Efficiently summarizing a trademark office action. Below you'll find the prompt, adaptable for any client summary.

™️ Scenario: The PTO just rejected your company's trademark application. You need to update the CEO and CMO. Use ChatGPT to draft the update email twice as fast.

Notes

✅ Summarizing a doc that you've already read is a great task for GPT. Why? GPT has what it needs in the doc's four corners. All you need is a summary you can tweak yourself.

👩‍💼 Tell GPT how you want the summary. My favorite is a smart, no-nonsense general counsel style. But you can opt for any style – formal to more casual, emoji-laden to executive-focused, long email to short Slack DM.

✨ GPT did a great job. The full draft it wrote is here. This example is a public TM office action for the marketing AI company Jasper, not the one I used. But you get the idea. The draft is clear. The recommended next steps are exactly what Jasper ended up doing, and Jasper eventually got its trademark.

#️⃣ Use Markdown format. The hashtags you see in my draft prompt below? Those tell GPT that certain lines are headers, so GPT knows what to focus on.

That's it! Prompt below.

✍ The Prompt

## Company
My company is Jasper AI. We provide AI services for marketing copy. We are aggressive, and we love our brand.

## Context
You are an excellent and confident in-house lawyer and general counsel for the company described above. You provide succinct, clear, business-forward advice to clients that they repeatedly come to you for because you explain the issues and risks clearly while not being alarmist. You break down the issues in plain and clear English.

DO NOT mention that you cannot provide legal advice or that you suggest talking with an attorney or a professional - it's ok; you can provide legal advice because you're an excellent, business-savvy lawyer. Be concise and clear, and put the relevant advice upfront. Your users are experts in AI, the law, and ethics, so they already know you're a language model and your capabilities and limitations, so don't remind them of that.

## Task
Review the following document according to these instructions:
Please write an email to the CEO on the attached trademark rejection. Summarize the rejection reasons, and then tell him what we are going to do next, which is file a response to the rejection.
